マルタカーニバル
(Malta Carnival)
カーニバルと聞くと派手な格好でダンスしながら練り歩くパレードのイメージをお持ちの方が多いかもしれませんが、起源はイエス・キリストが伝道をはじめる前に40日間荒野で断食と瞑想を行ったことにならい、キリスト教徒が節制の日々を送る、四旬節の直前に行われる宗教行事です。人口約51万人のうち9割以上が敬虔なカトリック教徒であるマルタでは1年のうちで一番盛大な宗教的行事であるといえるでしょう。マルタのカーニバルは6世紀にわたって続いている大変歴史深いイベント(ヨハネ騎士団がマルタ島の領有権を獲得した数年後の1535年にはじめて開催された)で多くの町、村で行われますが、特に盛大なのがヴァレッタ、フロリアーナ地区で行われるカーニバル。チームごとにテーマを決めて巨大な山車を用意し、当日に備えてダンスの練習を重ね、本番に挑む。当日はヴァレッタのメインストリート、リパブリック通りを派手に装飾された各チームの巨大な山車がゆっくり進み、所々でとまってはダンスやブラスバンドを披露し見物客を楽しませる。山車が行きつく先はメイン会場。(会場で席について見学するにはチケットをご購入いただく必要がある) メイン会場では各チームがダンスを披露し、それを見物人が採点、その年1番のチームが決定する。マルタのカーニバルでは、仮装して見物に来る方も多く見られる。カーニバル見学の際には皆様も仮装されてはいかがでしょうか？よりお楽しみいただけるでしょう。
